Microsoft is watching: DRM interrupts Killer Instinct tournament in NYC

By Unknown on Monday, December 16, 2013 with 43 comments

NEW YORK, NY -- Much to the shock of no one that owns Sony's Playstation 4 Video Game Console, it appears that Microsoft's insidious Digital Rights Management System, or "DRM", reared its ugly head during a local tournament for the Xbox One title Killer Instinct in New York City on 12 December 2013. During a live broadcast of the tournament on Twitch.tv, it appears that Microsoft's DRM system on the Xbox One activated, dropping the players back into the Xbox One Operating Systems' "Home" screen and prompting them to verify that they "own this game or app". It took nearly four minutes to resolve the DRM issue by connecting to the Internet to verify the software as genuine. This issue may prove to be a deal-breaker for the Tournament Organizers Party, which may opt not to run tournaments for games on the system, including Killer Instinct, should DRM issues such as these continue.
The owner of the Xbox One console said on stream that the DRM check "wouldn't happen if you go [into] Offline [mode]", though he followed up that statement with "it very rarely happens [at home] If I'm Online... once in a blue moon". This indicates that owners of Xbox One consoles are just as confused as everyone else is about the DRM, which means that you'd probably have better luck trying to get CDJr to stop complaining about Sabrewulf and just play the damn game than trying to understand how the DRM schemes work. You can view the incident on the "Nycfurby" Twitch.tv channel.
When solicited for comment on this story, a Microsoft representative asked, "What is 'FGCNN'?", before hanging up the phone. Double Helix was not asked to comment on this story. FGCNN has not been able to research the validity of any of these "DRM" claims, as FGCNN staff skipped over purchasing an XBox One to instead purchase a low-end $400 Gateway computer, as performance was better.
Is Microsoft completely clueless? Is Double Helix terrified that Microsoft's Draconian DRM schemes are going to lead to the demise of their title as a competitive game? Does anyone even care about "Killer Instinct"? Should everyone just buy Valve's "Steam Machine"? Let us know in the comments below!

Wow that $400 Gateway comment was pure anti-Xbox drivel. No wonder I've never heard of FCGNN, or whatever. What a crappy article.

You lost all credibility with any disparity with your opening line.
The game itself checks online for content every time I boot up. It's verifying user rights for a digital download. It's an exclusive issue to an online-only digital game. Should it be looked into/fixed? Yes. Will it be? Yes; DH wants this to be a big tournament game so it will happen if there is a serious issue.

considering its an app that has been downloaded off of the market place one would expect that you would need to validate that you own it now and then also 4 minuets to connect to the internet where they using dial up ?

Horrible written and very biased article. It's sites like this that are making a mockery of gaming and we would be much better if you just shut down this little clown site you started to stir up crap.

Thanks for posting this article and shedding some light on this serious problem. While most people may not see the issue at hand here, a tournament (with people from different regions attending, tight schedules and mind-games being a vital part of the gameplay) being interrupted by something like this is just unacceptable.

Luckily after a grueling 4 mins and some tweaking they were able to continue, though that not being possible could have been a just as likely scenario, had there not been an immediate internet connection nearby as well as the console owner. It saddens me that draconian DRM schemes like these still make it into games, specially fighting games, when Double Helix assured the community this would be tournament viable.

So the only website reporting this is a no name website, nobody else has heard of this, the system itself is incapable of doing this since the update is forced, and games aren't playable out of the box, and not a single comment I've read about Killer instinct even mentions this.

Bull shit doesn't quite describe this enough, but leave it up to the Sony fanboy half wits at N4G to take it as God's honest truth. Congratulations, you losers are cancer on this industry, how does it feel?

Next time you write some Draconian, half wit, moronic, conspiracy riddled, tripe piece, try to give us some tangible evidence that his invasive in the slightest, otherwise you're about as convincing as the dumb ass Mormons on my door step every Saturday. Leave the internet, the gamers who appreciate good journalism would appreciate said action.

Once his console is updated, it's over, it doesn't check anymore. The guy using the machine wasn't even the owner, he had no clue what he was doing, who knows what has, and hasn't been done to this device. On a side note, it was only one machine? Why didn't the rest do it? Maybe it was a hardware bug? A one in a million chance? So long as my games run offline like they have, and for hundreds of thousands of others, this is tripe, cherry picked, straw man, tripe.

Also, while I DO think the articles tone is quite biased, M$ deserves some dirt on this. How is it possible that it's easier to brick your console than to get a game running mid tournament?

And sheeesh to I feel bad for RicoSuave, all that lost momentum right there...

wow...all these people havent realized that the author was going for satire? I mean, look at his name; Scoop Newman....... Sure this issue with the XB1 is real, but the article is comedy.

Killer Instinct should be sold to NetherRealm Studios as they know how to make and release fighter games and 2 it should only be released in the PS4. The superior gaming machine.

So it was a live broadcast, and I see a bunch of stupid fags that are obviously Xbox fans saying this "didnt happen" and "isnt valid." You can just click on the link you morons, and see for yourself it is a real artilce, but they show the proof its happening. regardless of this article writers experiance.

PS4 a superior gaming machine I think I misread that, you meant to type PC there bro.

Why would I want to buy a 400 dollar shitty low end PC when a gateway computer has better performance

FGCNN, I have been coming to you for years for your unbiased and totally balanced reporting, and this article does not disappoint. Thank you for properly demonstrating what a threat the Xbox One's DRM poses towards our chuldren. How can they possibly learn how to properly troll in games, when DRM shuts the console down? TRULY A GRAVE THREAT TO THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

in response to gil h comment.... the total time for it to be fixed was 3:12:08. for someone to say 4 minutes is over blown cracks me up. People are allowed to have there responses to this article but dont make statements refering to his so called "false information." he said nearly 4 mins in bold. thats pretty close in my opinion. He ended his article with questions for us. thats unbiased to me. articles are allowed to have opinions also. he stated what went down and commments from the people that witnessed it. no one would be reading this article if the writer didnt have an opinion on the matter. people would find it boring. this article is made to entertain not persuade. so i will end it with a " ARE U YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??" :D

If any of you complaining about this actually bothered to read ANY other article on this website, you'd know EVERY ONE OF THEM is written in a satirical "tongue-in-cheek" tone. This website is basically "The Onion News" for the FGC. The fact that you are taking this one story so seriously pretty much marks you all as obvious Xbox fanboys to the extreme, and you should all now hang your heads in shame for being such gullible idiot troll-bait.
That is all. Further bulletins as events warrant.
